Quick Shahi Tukre

Shahi Tukre

[Imperial Style of Hyderabad]

This imperial sweet dish has its roots in Mughlai cuisine. It is traditionally served in the holy month of Ramadan or for big celebrations like Eid. Shahi Tukre can be made with various of nuts and dry fruits. The most beautiful thing about this recipe is, that it is very easy and quick to make. You can make it anytime when having cravings or when having sudden surprising guests arriving your home or prepare this imperial sweet on the big occasion of Eid.
People who never used to eat Shahi Tukre started eating this scrumptious sweet after I served them this way. For those who are little health conscious, I will mention healthier options which taste as good as the original way. And by the way this recipe is anyway a healthier way as it's being baked ad not fried. So don't stop yourself from enjoying this delicious Imperial Sweet.

Here is the final recipe:

Serves 4

Ingredients:
  • 5 Slice of Bread
  • 2 tbsp of Ghee (Clarified Butter)
  • 1/2 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Water
  • 1 cup of Milk
  • 1 cup of Cream
  • Nuts for garnishing
  • Dry fruits for garnishing

Method :
  1. Toast the bread. Cut in Triangle and brush with ghee.
  2. In a saucepan make the 'sheera' [sugar syrup] by melting the sugar with the water and cook till sugar is completely dissolved. Keep aside
  3. In another saucepan heat the milk together with the cream and let it cook for 5 mins. Keep aside.
  4. Now assemble in a baking dish: Dip the toast in the sugar syrup and place it in the dish. Pour the milk over it and garnish with nuts.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven for approximately 15 minutes or till light golden brown.
  6. Serve chilled.

Healthy option:
  • Skip the coating with ghee and just toast the bread slightly.
  • Use brown bread instead of white bread.
  • Reduce the sugar and add honey instead
